Adverse yaw
Roll into a turn and the nose first swings the wrong way, away from the turn. That is adverse yaw: any yaw that works against the pilot (TP 1102).
Cause: rolling in, the rising wing (its aileron is down) makes more lift, so it also makes more induced drag. The extra drag on that wing yaws the nose toward the raised wing, i.e. away from the turn.
Fix: apply rudder into the turn, the same direction as the aileron, at the same time. The rudder pressure needed varies and is held only while the ailerons are deflected.
- Down-going aileron / rising wing = the source of the drag.
- Nose yaws away from the turn (toward the raised wing).
- Coordinate with rudder in the direction of the turn.
Trap: thinking the yaw goes into the turn, or applying opposite rudder. The nose yaws away, so rudder goes with the turn.
