Land and hold short operations (LAHSO)

LAHSO = Land And Hold Short Operations. At a tower airport, ATC may clear you to land and stop, or turn off, before an intersecting runway (or a marked hold point) so another aircraft can use the crossing runway (TC AIM RAC 4.4.9).

• The PIC has complete authority to accept or decline a LAHSO clearance (TC AIM RAC 4.4.9).
• Decline it and ask for the full runway if you are not sure you can stop; you must decline if it would compromise safety.
• Accept only when you know the aircraft can land and stop within the landing distance available to the hold line.

Trap: a LAHSO clearance is not mandatory, any pilot (VFR or IFR) may decline it and take the full length, no emergency needed.
